Cut Broom in Bloom

Vancouver Island & BC Mainland’s Grassroots Scotch Broom Containment Campaign

Every year, 600-700 volunteers cut broom between 5000-6000 hours on Vancouver Island and BC lower mainland.  Active areas stretched from Sooke to Alert Bay, from Port Alberni to Coquitlam.  Fourteen municipalities and four regional districts. The invasion of Scotch broom is one environmental problem we can do something about – together.  You can help!

Why Cut Broom?

Scotch Broom is a highly aggressive, highly flammable, alien invasive plant.  It has been ranked the TOP OFFENDER of Bio-diversity in BC because to grows rapidly, crowds out native plants, and prevents the regrowth of understory species and forests, harming native plants, terrestrial animals, insects birds and bees.

How to cut Broom?

Cut Broom in Bloom at ground level or below with loppers, in spring, when broom is near or in-bloom, before seedpods form.
